The parts of the body and upper back are dark blue , cobalt , including the first dorsal fin . The underside is silvery white . In many cases , there is a maximum of 15 vertical lines , which are composed of small dots and narrow bars , cobalt blue. These bands become bright enough when the fish is ready to hit or when hooked , but disappear quickly when the fish is out of water. The remaining blue marlin fins are generally black - brown and anal fins have a silvery white hue . The main way to distinguish blue marlin family is to examine the shape of the tip of the dorsal fin , which is more pronounced in the blue marlin .
